Slim’s New Bone to Hawk Cell Phones

Selling mobile phones is a competitive racket, and here in the U.S., we’re no strangers to endless promotions from cellular providers. “Buy one phone, get another free” and the like have been part of the mobile phone landscape almost as long as there has been a mobile phone landscape. But Carlos Slim Helú, the world’s richest man, according to Forbes, is taking cell phone sales to a different level.
America Movil (AMX), the Mexican mobile phone provider, is offering to give away 200 puppies in a raffle to customers in Colombia, Bloomberg News reports, and the folks at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are none too pleased.
America Movil, Latin America’s largest mobile provider, isn’t giving away mutts, either. The raffled dogs include pugs, beagles, boxers, shih tzus and labradors, Bloomberg said. Giving away puppies seems like a curious move for a guy like Slim. It can be argued that he is a prickly character given his reported views on philanthropy.
Of course, America Movil wants to sell phones. Apparently the 20% the stock has gained in the past year isn’t enough.
Maybe Slim really is a nice guy. After all, he’s a major shareholder in The New York Times (NYT), and that company is not exactly the beacon of profitability, so perhaps it’s nice he has faith in that dog of a stock.
