Nuke It–The Oil Spill and BP
It sounds like a bad joke, but the idea of using a nuclear detonation to stop the BP oil spill is starting to sound appealing.
Take an ear to the comments by Ocean Energy Institute founder Matthew Simmons, who is popping up everywhere from Bloomberg to YouTube.
The idea of using a nuke–just a little one, mind you–to collapse the leaking gusher comes awfully close to the plot of many a bad movie. It’s crazy–so crazy it might just work!
In all seriousness, the scale of this particular disaster is so huge that it may be time to start weighing the damage from a single submarine nuclear detonation against that of widespread global surface destruction.
Of course, none of the experts is putting and over and under on the possibility that a nuclear explosion might actually make the leak bigger instead of plugging it.
Doh!

“The plan is to contain the oil slick with fire-retardant beams, and then set fire to the oil that pools on the surface. They say if it works there in the Gulf, they’re going to try it on the cast of Jersey Shore.” —Bill Maher
