Summers Takes a Shot (Or Two) at Winklevoss Twins

by Todd Shriber

Former Harvard University president and former Obama administration member Larry Summers offered up a less-than-complimentary view of the formerly litigious Winklevoss twins, who gained notoriety through their recently scuttled lawsuit against social networking giant Facebook.

In an interview with Fortune at the magazine’s Brainstorm Tech conference, Summers had the following to say about Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who were students at the Ivy League school while Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was there:

One of the things you learn as a college president is that if an undergraduate is wearing a tie and jacket on Thursday afternoon at three o’clock, there are two possibilities. One is that they’re looking for a job and have an interview; the other is that they are an a**hole. This was the latter case.”

Summers dismissed the twins who had approached him for help in their rift with Zuckerberg, Fortune notes. That real-life scenario would later hit the big screen in the hit movie Social Network.

While Summers is entitled to his opinion of the twins, the timing of his comments is somewhat odd given that the Winklevosses scrapped their lawsuit against Facebook nearly a month ago, as Trader Daily reported.

The comments from Summers may sting a bit, but the Winklevosses can laugh… all the way to bank. The stock they received as part of $65 million settlement with Facebook in 2008 is now worth about $100 million.

  1. Apparently former Harvard University President Larry Summers felt that way about Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss when the two twins that tried to take down Mark Zuckerberg for allegedly screwing them over on the development of Facebook marched into his office back in 2004.Speaking during an interview at the Brainstorm Tech conference earlier this week Summers said that One of the things you learn as a college president is that if an undergraduate is wearing a tie and jacket on Thursday afternoon at three o clock there are two possibilities. One is that they re looking for a job and have an interview said Summers. This was the latter case. Summers took a poke at the Facebook fellows and now they are giving him the thumbs down claiming that his remark was not limited to just them but extends to any undergraduate who chooses a particular form of attire. Geez they even sound the way they dress. In a letter directed towards current Harvard president Drew Gilpin Faust the Winklevoss brothers voice their complaint against the ex-Pres apparently because uh they re sad or something? It is deeply disturbing that a professor of this university openly admits to making character judgments of students based on their appearance write the twins.Shame on you Summers.
