Bespoke Releases 2010 Market Performance, CSE Soars

Bespoke Investment Group, a New York-based research firm, has calculated the year-to-date performance of the major stock markets of 82 countries.

According to the list, the average year to date change for all listed countries is 5.39%, with a median change of 2.23%, while the S&P 500′s YTD change was -1.24%.

Sri Lanka’s Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) has experienced a strong YTD spike of 73.69%, although a decrease compared to its 2009 jump of 125.2%. The recent rise in the CSE, whose record-breaking rallies began following the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War on May 18th, 2009, was led mainly by high local trade in tourism, plantation, and motor sectors, according to Reuters.  The article also points out that the All Share Price Index (ASPI) broke through its previous high of 3549.27 points on January 11th, 2010.

On the other side of the ledger, Bermuda hits the rock bottom of the list with a loss so far this year of 39.25%, and Greece is  second to last, down 24.56%. Interestingly, the BRIC nations – Brazil, Russia, India and China – have averaged a loss so far of 3.9%, pulled down by China’s 18%
