Signaling the rash of job cuts stalking the financial community is beginning to singe even the most devout workers – you know, the ones who got up early, kept their heads down, never fussed, put their backs uncomplainingly to the grind (not to mention refraining from brown-nosing, water-cooler gossip and all office-politicking, and are beginning now to think the better of it) – this open letter from one fallen Bartleby stands as an ominous warning of what happens to those who come to Wall Street with stars in their eyes.

How Can Suze Orman Be So Wrong?

Financial guru Suze Orman was Oprah Winfrey's guest yesterday. Don't get me wrong - I don't watch the show. Please. I'm not that shallow.

Where was I? Oh, right. So Dr. Phil had just wrapped up another excellent broadcast (the man is a genius) and the TV was still on. Here comes Oprah, with today's show titled "Emergency Money Questions with Suze Orman." Now, I happen to know a couple of things about money, questions and answers, so I'm not really interested. Not at first.

Goldman: You’re Dismissed
Article : March 2008
According to The New York Post, this may be what Goldman plans to say to a not-so-insignificant portion of its work force. (But remember, this is the Post we are talking about here: generally not the shining beacon of accuracy; yet, its reporters do get poached by The Wall Street Journal, so we’re at sixes and sevens about what to think.) That said, given the current mood on Wall Street, there’s a lot of reason to believe that for many, this may be a not-so-good Friday.

Because you like it, and you like liking it. Ready? Two well-capitalized traders made a bet last year on which market sector would be the hottest for 2007. One of them wagered financial services. The other favored oil and gold. We clearly know which side won, but it turns out the bet (which was for $50,000) was made on the air, as the two men also happen to be big-time TV personalities. Northern Rock Shares Rocked (Again)
Article : September 2007
It's not looking like Northern Rock is going to get acquired anytime soon, and even worse some are starting to wonder whether or not the bank will be able to pay its intermim dividend. What's more, three hedge funds have reportedly discussed plans to dismantle the bank. All of this adds up to a very poor showing in the market yesterday, with Northern Rock's shares losing over 11% by the time the market closed yesterday. You likely should not be holding your breath for that takeover, either. Gordon Scott of Fitch Ratings said, "It depends on how markets evolve and how markets normalise."

Rose To Blackstone
Article : August 2007
This is developing into a nice little drama. Blackstone's taken on Goldman's former PR guy, Peter Rose. It's been rumored that Blackstone and Goldman have been enduring a riff as buyout competition has gotten tighter, and maybe because Goldman has some bitterness that Blackstone's significantly smaller tax bill has helped their numbers look much better than Goldman's. But now with how much they've spent on lobbyist coming out, and with their share price enduring some dips since its IPO, Blackstone is looking for some good PR. Interesting they went to Goldman to get it. An act of aggression, or is it humble?
